History and Population
The land that is now Shaker Heights was purchased from the North Union Shakers in 1905 by M.J. and O.P. Van Sweringen. (The Shakers are religious sect that, in the late 1700s, came to America from England in search of religious freedom.) The Van Sweringens developed what they called Shaker Village, which was later renamed Shaker Heights, as one of the first "Garden City" suburbs in this country. They built beautiful homes, planted trees, provided land for schools and churches, added to the lakes built by the Shakers, and developed the rapid transit system to provide convenient commuting to downtown Cleveland. Since that time, the city of Shaker Heights has thrived and upheld standards of excellence reminiscent of the early Shaker community.
Currently, the city of Shaker Heights covers and area of around 6.5 square miles, and the community is home to some 32,000 residents of richly varied cultural backgrounds. Long known for the beauty of its homes and parklands, Shaker Heights is also renowned for its commitment to educational excellence and is one of America's premier suburbs.
Education
The Shaker Heights City School District encompasses the city of Shaker Heights and a small section of Cleveland near Shaker Square, totaling approximately 7.5 square miles.
Since the construction of its first school building some 80 years ago, the Shaker Heights City School District has grown into one of the finest public school systems in the United States. The Shaker schools currently serve approximately 5,600 students in eight buildings: five K-4 elementary schools; Woodbury Elementary School (grades 5 and 6); Shaker Middle School (grades 7 and 8) and Shaker Heights High School (9-12).
The Ohio Department of Education has said about the Shaker Heights School District, "The exemplary character of this school district does not happen solely by chance or by the good fortune of factors that favor educational quality. It is the result of outstanding leadership and long-range planning at the administrative level, both at the district level and at each of the buildings. It is associated with high expectations of staff and students. It reflects the continuing priority to bring outstanding teachers to the district and to support them as professionals."
